Medical. Since December 2024, regulated health professionals in Alberta are prohibited from performing sex-reassignment surgeries on minors. As of 7 January 2026, Ministerial Order 31/2025 prohibits hormones and puberty blockers for gender dysphoria or gender incongruence — with exceptions: (1) a minor who had already commenced the treatment; (2) ages 16 and 17, if a parent or guardian and a physician and a psychologist all approve; (3) disorders of sex development. New starts under 16 are banned. Sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds are not under a flat ban. Alberta did not ban all medical interventions under 18.
A court injunction briefly stopped the hormone rules. Bill 9 (Royal Assent 11 December 2025) used the notwithstanding clause. The law is in force. Egale Canada and Skipping Stone are still in court. That is status, not the ban being lifted.
Schools. The Education Amendment Act, 2024 (formerly Bill 27; Royal Assent 5 December 2024) requires parental notification if a student under 18 asks for a gender-identity-related name or pronouns, and parental consent before staff use them for students under 16. It also moves gender-identity / sexual-orientation / human-sexuality instruction to parental opt-in, with minister approval of those resources. Remaining school provisions took effect 1 September 2025. Bill 9 keeps those Education Act school pieces in force. That is Schools restriction.
